Musical Pitch (pitch)

Pitch is an attribute of auditory sensation in terms of which sounds may be ordered on a scale extending from low to high, such as a musical scale. Pitch is primarily dependent upon the frequency of the sound stimulus.

The average human ear can distinguish 1,400 discrete frequencies. However, in the equally tempered scale covering the hearing range of 16 to 16,000 cycles (hertz) there are only 120 discrete tones. That is to say, only certain discrete frequencies are allowed and others are ruled out. It is because human hearing can rule out some frequencies that we can hear discrete tones.
